Abstract of the chapter

Evolution of the genus Homo

Labib Drak

The first Homo fossils, Homo habilis, were found in Africa around 2.5 million years ago. Homo erectus was the first ones to expand into Eurasia. Some of this Homo erectus had a height and corporal proportions that are quite different from the previous forms.

Later, different fossils appeared. They are seen as new species by some specialists and as variants of a group by others, due to genetic isolation, microevolution and climatic factors.

Neanderthals are a relevant group of Homo fossils who developed a symbolic behavior and who disappeared mysteriously around 30,000 years ago. Since then, Homo sapiens sapiens was the last group of our genus alive. Like the other forms of genus Homo, they adapted to different landscapes and climatic conditions and their origin is being studied by different scientists in the field of Paleoanthropology and Human evolution.
